Swiss Litter Report
Project
SLR - Swiss Litter Report is a extensive national litter survey based on a globally accredited method for marine litter research.

It identifies and quantifies litter in Swiss rivers, lakes and on exposed areas on land. It collects information and data on litter by employing an easy to use monitoring app. Most of the litter collection and counting will be done by citizen scientists on a voluntary bases.

Monitored by professionals, it provides representative data, which will be fed into the global marine litter database.
How it works
  • during one year, from September 2016 to September 2017 several groups of volunteers will collect, identify and quantify litter
  • the litter will be collected on 50 spots on river shores, lake sides and on exposed areas on land
  • there will be weekly collections per spot, 52 in total
  • the collected litter is classified in different categories in the macro segment: pieces of a minimum 5 mm size
  • to complete the report we will include actual data about micro-litter and micro-plastics: pieces of less that 5 mm size
  • all macro litter will be laid out, counted and categorized according and fed into the marine litter app  and an app developed by hammerdirt.ch
  • the GPS monitored apps allow to track back all collection data to place and time, where and when found and by whom
  • all litter found at the 50 spots will be collected by STOPPP and brought to one central collecting point
  • after the collection phase of one year the litter mountain will be exposed and publicly auctioned
  • the activities of the Swiss Litter Report will be documented on film and spread on social media
  • public media will be regularly invited for special reports and press releases will be published monthly

The App
Results & Goals
The SLR aims to strengthen Europe’s knowledge base on litter and thus provide support to Swiss and European policy making.

  • the results of SLR will be published monthly on the STOPPP-website and on social media
  • all data collected will be monitored by hammerdirt association providing scientific accuracy to the report
  • the statistics professionals and associated scientists and universities will write a scientific paper on the data collected by SLR
  • the final report will be officially published by the end of 2017

Volunteers, Citizen Scientits & Partnering Institutions
SLR - Swiss Litter Report will depend on volunteers which STOPPP recruits within partnering associations, schools and volunteering platforms such as benevol jobs . The volunteers don't need any kind of knowledge about litter collection.

  • volunteers need to be engaged and accurate people, willing to help one of the largest citizen scientist projects to come true
  • volunteers can be aged 12 to 80 years
  • volunteers will be trained by the hammerdirt professionals and coached by the leader of the collection group
  • volunteers can commit to one or several collection sessions
  • group leaders need to commit to at least 10 collection sessions and be able to bring at least one volunteer
